Embratel has the largest long distance telecommunications network in South America. MCI recently purchased Embratel, which was a government institution. Embratel renders long distance and international telecommunication services, in addition to 40 other communication services. It is also the main high-speed data and Internet provider in Brazil with the largest wide band optical fiber network more than 18,000 kilometers long.
