About BACnet

BACnet Information and Resources

BACnet is the term commonly used to refer to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-2004, "BACnet: A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control networks," approved and supported by the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). BACnet is a true, non-proprietary, open and standard communications protocol developed and maintained by a consortium of building management, system users and manufacturers.

The BACnet Standard and its companion testing standard, BSR/ASHRAE Standard 135.1-2003, "Method of Test for Conformance to BACnet," have been adopted by the International Standards Organization as ISO Standards 16484-5 and 16484-6. The testing standard is the basis for the conformance testing conducted by the BACnet Testing Labs (external link); devices that pass this testing are awarded the BTL Mark (external link) and are listed by the BTL.
